WMB Leadership Board
Role of the Leadership Board (LB)

The Leadership Board speaks on behalf of the membership, a task that requires knowing our faith community well and what its desires are. The Board members do not represent individual constituencies or specific interest groups. Members of governance board must have a more corporate viewpoint that addressed the needs of the whole body.

The Leadership Board must see to it that the church achieves its goals. WMB should actualize its mission ...making more and better disciples… and achieve its vision ...glorify God by gathering in community, growing in our faith and giving of ourselves and our resources so that we may go into the world and build relationships that offer the hope and grace of Jesus Christ. These statements set direction, guide policy, and create the framework for defining what the church is to accomplish, for whom, and at what cost or relative worth.

General Responsibilities of the Leadership Board

  • Ensure that the mission and vision of WMB are upheld.
  • Ensure that the members, adherents and immediate surrounding community are well-served in spiritual matters according to the Bible.
  • Ensure that WMB adheres to the Confession of Faith of the General Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches.
  • Approve policy statements, compensation frameworks and expenditures between three and six percent of the total budget.
  • Approve long-range plans for spiritual needs, program priorities, budget, property and daughter congregations.
The Making of a Board

The Leadership Board is comprised of eight to twelve members of our faith community. Board members are elected annually and may serve a maximum of six one-year terms. Each year some board members retire and new members replace them.

Every spring, a Discernment Committee is appointed by the existing Leadership Board. This committee consists of three to five members from outside the Board, in addition to the Lead Pastor. Nominations are received from our church community. The committee interviews the nominees, decides on a slate and then presents the candidates to the members for approval.

Qualities and Characteristics of Board Members

  • Members in good standing of WMB.
  • Ability to make decision and willingness to work effectively in a group.
  • Gifted in leadership and discernment.
  • Spiritual characteristics as described in 1 Tim. 3:1-13 & Titus 1:5-9.
  • Ability to cast and facilitate implementation of vision.
Leadership Board committees are selected from existing board members. The board may appoint (and disband) temporary committees (task forces, teams or individuals) to assist with duties and responsibilities.

Board members attend regular meetings and additional meetings as required. Each meeting is begun with a time of devotion and prayer before any ‘business’ is done. They also pray regularly for WMB as they listen to God and seek His will for this faith community.
