Pastor training in Rwanda

Paul's Story, February 6-14, 2009

Fred, the pastor of a small rural church in Rwanda, approached me after one of our teaching sessions. Through an interpreter, he asked me if I remembered him during our first training session two years earlier. Of course I did. Fred was in my breakout group; a man in his early 50's who felt so insecure that he could hardly look anyone in the eye during even a short conversation. I discovered that when he was young, he was one member of a large, poor family. His father had not allowed him to go to school, and told him repeatedly that he would never amount to anything more that a poor farmer!

Fred told me that when I had lead all of the pastors in foot washing and then prayed, through an interpreter, specifically for him and his ministry, his life was changed. He realized that he had value in the eyes of other people and, more importantly, in the eyes of God. He wanted me to know how much that experience meant to him, and that he would never forget it. I think of Fred often, and am humbled at how God used me to speak life into him and his ministry in Rwanda.
