Fiesta Story

Sharing meals, sharing life

When lots of friends who all speak different languages come together for a common cause, only one common language is needed…love! After opening their homes and spending time with new Canadians, a group of WMB families felt a need to help two refugee families raise funds so that they could attend Camp Crossroads family camp this summer. The refugee families planned and cooked an authentic Latin meal, complete with guacamole, tortilla soup and empanadas, and entertained over 100 people with their delicious food! The WMB community that has grown to know and love these families pitched in to serve and clean up.

This WMB community of families meet throughout the year for potlucks with the purpose of welcoming new Canadians to the area. They help with whatever is needed – furniture, jobs, clothing, legal support and above all, a listening ear. Spending time with the new Canadians has caused these Canadian families, both children and adults, to make new friends and to think differently about the world around them.  And it all started with a simple potluck meal. So, the next time you hear Spanish at WMB, please welcome our friends from Mexico and Colombia!
