Discovering What We Lack

Pouring a floor, building relationships

During March break, I had an opportunity to go to Ecuador on a mission trip. In Quito, the capital city, slums dominate, stray dogs exist on every street corner and walls topped with broken glass or nails frame the city streets. Most of the city seemed to be held together by pure will, from the one room shack resting on the side of a mountain, to a wall leaning so far over it doesn’t feel safe to walk beside. The contrast between the North American world and Ecuador is enormous.

My mission field is right here at home. While I am definitely comfortable spending time with people who don’t share my faith, it is just so easy to hibernate at the end of a long week and simply enjoy the quiet time. The recent study group “The Tangible Kingdom” has challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and do more spontaneous things.

There were a million ways Mom could have celebrated her 60th birthday, but she wanted to do something different. Her birthday wish was that her children would plan a mission trip together.

Sharing meals, sharing life

When lots of friends who all speak different languages come together for a common cause, only one common language is needed…love! After opening their homes and spending time with new Canadians, a group of WMB families felt a need to help two refugee families raise funds so that they could attend Camp Crossroads family camp this summer. The refugee families planned and cooked an authentic Latin meal, complete with guacamole, tortilla soup and empanadas, and entertained over 100 people with their delicious food!

Can the Lord’s Prayer be applied to work life? Ralph thinks so…

3 years ago, Ralph came to realize that he had to put aside his sense of pride in his own accomplishments. He had always felt that his own success and the success of his company was due to his strengths – HIS sales technique, HIS years of experience… Then one day, Ralph was facing an extreme shortage of work with nothing on the horizon. All of HIS best efforts proved fruitless.

Amy's Story

Amy loves to create a warm and caring space for our youngest children to learn about God's great love for us. Over the years, she has appreciated the way WMB as a family strives to meet the practical needs of those in our community. When she was approached about becoming the volunteer coordinator for the nursery, toddler and preschool rooms, she saw it as a great way to practically get involved in children's ministry. For 10 years Amy worked in a local daycare as an early childhood educator, and now she is at home with her own small children.

Hart's Story

In 1973 Hart and his wife Ginny set out on the adventure of their lives. They became missionaries. Intent on serving God, they chose Bible translation as their strategy to help take the Gospel to another culture. Their assignment was to live with and begin a Bible translation project among the Kalinga people, a tribe described by an anthropologist as “headhunters.” This is their story:
