Barnabas Missions
Barnabas Missions hopes to express God's love by offering practical support to those both within our WMB community and to those in our cities who are living on a limited budget and struggling to make ends meet. We do this through encouragement, discussing other community resources, planning for long-term well-being, budgeting and financial assistance, by assisting with food, housing, education, and health supports. It is our desire to creatively respond to each person who comes for help.
Beyond the Finances
Barnabas Missions has opportunities beyond direct financial help though which we offer support.
Three Strands
Three Strands is a ministry that aims to create community through enjoying fun activities or learning a helpful skill. It is centered on Ecclesiastes 4:10-12: “If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." The three strands are: God, Barnabas participants, and us!
Our main class is cooking (learning occurs around making quick, easy, healthy and inexpensive meals; families in need of a slow cooker get to take one home!) Other ideas are always welcome.
Barnabas Prayer Connection
A WMB Small Group or family may adopt a Barnabas recipient and commit to praying for the individual/family. The group may also wish to send birthday and Christmas cards, or other gifts of encouragement.
Budget Coaching
Individuals and families can work one-on-one with a trained budget coach. Together they put the budget on paper, work on attaining a balanced budget and paying off debts. Other personal financial goals can also be discussed, such as the ability to start saving.
In Our Community
Barnabas Missions is partnering with Shamrock Co-op and Waterloo Region Housing to build community in a local neighbourhood. Opportunities for residents to become involved include: homework club, weekly childrens sports time, as well as participate in one-time events such as tax clinics, First Aid course and BBQ. We hope that participation in these activities will increase the sense of community and will draw people into caring for one another. Kingscourt News April 2010
At Christmas
From Jesus With Love (FJWL) is an opportunity to serve parents in our community who struggle with Christmas expenses by providing gifts for their children. Gifts are generously donated through WMB’s congregation.
