Embracing Diversity Karen West Speaking
Whether it be family, work, friendships or church, wherever people are together with others, disagreements and differences of opinion seem to be part of the story! How can we disagree...see things differently...have diverse opinions...without becoming defensive and alienating ourselves from one another?
The church at Philippi was full of diversity - men, women, affluent, poor, those of prominence in society, those without. Yet in this letter, the Apostle Paul has been asking the Philippians to stand firm with one another, no matter what they might face... and here he ‘brings home' to them all that he's been teaching them so far, in a practical example concerning two leading women in the church at Philippi.
In Philippians 4:1-9, the Apostle Paul gives practical guidelines on how we can be yoked together and stand in common unity with one another, even when we disagree. He teaches us how God's peace can guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as we learn to think like he thinks, and to act like he acts. -

Whining or Shining? Karen West Speaking
Our North American culture is conditioned by ‘individualism'. We consider the world around us through a lens of self. We think of ‘community' as a collection of individuals, each with their own needs that the community should meet. But the kind of ‘community' God invites us to is different. We are invited to let go of our individual needs for the sake of a greater, unified purpose, held in common with others. Preferences, personal opinions, individual arguments, and even theological differences begin to fall away. Something greater than all these is at stake.
As followers of Jesus, we take on this new heritage of common unity so that we might ‘work out' the salvation God has given to us by his grace, and then shine like stars in our darkened world. Rather than grumbling and arguing, we are to pull together around the Word of Life himself and live differently! Imagine our world if all Christians focused primarily on what we have in common and aligned in Christ's mission. Surely our world would change.
